    image -> machining

    I'm wondering if there is a program out there that can convert an image into a 3d model based on the colour. for example using the grey scale in a black and white image to extrapolate the different hights of different sections.

    I'm trying to make some engraved art out of some drawings.

    any suggestions are totally welcome.

    If you're using Mach2 to run your machine, it can do it as well, but you won't have as much control as MeshCAM gives.

    Rhino 3 can do this. It's called 'Heightfield from Image'. You can download a fully functional copy of Rhino 3 (limited to 25 saves) and try it out.

    Excellent tip Ray, thanks! If I may say, it's been 4 months since I switched from AutoCAD to Rhino and I haven't looked back.

    Non-Rhino users don't know what they're missing! I was an AutoCAD user too and was constantly frustrated when I tried modeling stuff with a little style. :cheers:
