    Woodruff Cutter

I have to machine a grove for a retaining ring in a round part. I am turning on my turntable and have some limitations to the tool diameter. (envision a bagel where I have to cut a grove on the inside hole)

Anyway I can get a woodruff cutter into the area to machine. The part is Aluminum so my basic question is what type to choose? staggered tooth? or straight tooth cutter?

or is there another option for tooling to make the cut... I will post a picture if needed.

A lathe would be my first choice but guessing that's not an option, staggered will plunge a bit smoother than straight.

Thanks Hoss. I dont have a lathe....yet. Plus its a large diameter part so I would need a big lathe.
