I'm using Rhino. Our students get most training in Rhino, but we also have Solidworks available One of the students helping me is really good at Solidworks, so when the machine is completely done, he's going to redo the entire drawing in Solidworks. Part of the job with the development of this machine is that we have to create really thorough documentation.

I've just purchased RhinoCam which will be our primary CAM package.

    Progress!!

Parts have started rolling inn the door.
*The delivery from Rollco arrived yesterday... all 277kg of it!
*The C11 card from CNC4PC showed up today.

As soon as the electrician is done installing 2 new 16A circuits in our CNC room we'll start the build. I'll wait with taking the Sieg KX3S off its pallet until this is done as well.

The parts from Damen CNC should be arriving next week.

    Things are really rolling now!

Started assembling the profiles today. After a quick call to Rollco to sort out some mounting questions, things went together smoothly. The connections feel very solid, and I'm sure it will be very rigid when fully assembled.

The Damen CNC proucts are on their way.

I've got a webcam in the CNC room taking shots every 10 minutes while I'm working. Should make a nice time lapse video when the build is done.

Those profiles is realy god to build with, Did you order precut profiles?
An what was the price on them?
I built mine frome 40x80 (not light version) and milling aluminium with no problem, can even make parts in steel if I don't run to hard.

Keep uppdating with picures it's always fun to see.

Initially I was going to order the profiles in full lengths and cut them myself, but the Rollco salesman offered them to me pre-cut for no extra cost. When they arrived they were not only pre-cut but also had through-holes drilled and ends tapped! That saved me hours of work.

The price was.... well let's just say being an educational institution has its advantages when purchasing almost anything. It wasn't cheap but we got a very good deal.

Finished assembling the table today. We also mounted the belt units.

The quality of the cuts and hole positioning is impressive. After we bolted it together, without any thought of lining things up and making them square at this early stage, we measured diagonally from corner to corner and found the difference to be less than 0.5mm. This might be very normal for pre-cut aluminum profiles, but my last router build was MDF, so I found it thoroughly impressive

It's been a long time since I updated, and unfortunately the progress has been rather slow. I will get back to describing in more detail what has been done, but for now I'll just post some pictures of the progress so far.

That's a nice looking machine. What are you using for linear bearings or rails on your X-axis?

    Thanks

The X axis is running on enclosed belt driven linear rails. There is a link to a youtube video describing them in more detail in post #2 of this thread.

I'm ashamed at the lack of progress, but this spring semester has been extremely hectic. I am determined to have it up and running before the start of the fall semester. The summer months... or should I say weeks are very quite at the school, so I can work pretty uninterrupted.

I'll be getting back with more detailed description of the progress, but for now, here are a couple of videos of what I have been doing the last couple of days:
