I am having some trouble getting a price together for someone who asked me to do some simple wood CNC work for him. Could someone tell me if I’m in the ballpark with this price. Here is what he asked of me…

Qty-2 of the following
Customer supplied wood
Milling out (12) 5/16” x 6” long slots in ¾” thk wood.


Qty-2 of the following
Customer supplied wood
Milling out (30) 5/16” x 7 1/2” long slots in ¾” thk wood.


Qty-1 of the following
Customer supplied wood
Milling out (36) 5/16” x 6” long slots in ¾” thk wood.


Qty-4 of the following
Customer supplied wood
Milling out (15 or so) 5/16” x 6” long slots in ¾” thk wood.



Could someone tell me if I’m nuts for only charging him $148.00… or is that a pretty good price.

How much time is it going to take for all the operations?

If it could be accomplished on a router table it might only be 10 minutes worth of work.

The guy I’m doing it for owns his own woodshop, and he can’t do it himself with a router table. It should take about 5.5 hours (cutting time) for everything. The wood he is supplying will be slightly oversized; he will cut to size when I’m done. This is my first job for him, so I want to under charge him a little so he keeps coming back.

Once you undercharge or low ball a job, the customer will always expect that.

I would suggest charging what is fair for both parties.

I think its more than fair as long as both parties profit.

My local guy charges $30 an hour.

$148 is way low for 5.5 hours of work. However, it seems to me that it shouldn't really take 5.5 hours.

If you have a slow machine, you can't charge more because your machine takes longer.

Am I correct that he's giving you 9 pieces of wood? I would think that it's a 2-2.5 hour job. At about $60/hour, that would put you close to your $148 price. So I'd say that it's a fair price.
