Re: Huanyang Chinese VFD settings and manual here!

So the main frequency isn't the input power frequency? (Not arguing, trying to learn)
In the US that's 60hz isn't it? (I know nothing of power frequencies, just voltage.. This is way above my paygrade lol)

Ok looked at it does not give an explanation of what 1 2 3 means so just leave it at 0 and if it all runs ok then it is a Parameter that is not needed for your operation

No not at all, the supply frequency has nothing to do with what type of motor you are driving, Regluar Ac motor or Spindle a regular 3Ph Ac motor would run and may be programed using 60Hz but normally different numbers are used depending on what speed you want to run it at , your spindle is 400hz so if you try and run it set at 60hz then most times the smoke come out before you have time to turn it off

Plugged in, turned on and pressed go - no magic smoke and spindle ran up pretty good. Not sure if I'm getting 24,000 rpm (no tach) but it sounds pretty good! Much faster than when I tested it before.
Thanks for all the help mactech!

I have been working on a new CNC lathe build. Have a spindle setup from and old pneumatic controlled lathe.

I have had problems with getting the Haun Yang VFD working with the Baldor 5HP motor.

Motor was set to high voltage mode and I rewired for low voltage mode. The motor has a Brake and Clutch, runs the lathe spindle through v belts

With the VFD the motor spins but when the clutch is turned on the lathe spindle spins a second or so then the VFD errors with E.OC.n

Error is over current so I wonder if the VFD is too small. It is the 5HP one advertised to run a 5HP motor

    Baldor motor 5HP

    208-230 volts
    15-13.2 amps
    rpm 1725
    hz 60
    3 phase

I was hoping to be able to set it to the optimal programmed parameters. Would someone post a set of parameters for this specific motor? I have it set up with the set of parameters from page 10 of this thread.

How do I know if the VFD is too small for the motor.

    Huan Yang VFD model:
    HY04D023B
    3PH 0~220AC 4.0KW 18A 0.50-400.00HZ

There could be different Parameters needed than what is on page 10 that should be close but may need some changes for yours

Can you post a photo of the VFD Drives Terminals and how do you have the input power connected ???

Are you using Single Phase or 3 Phase Power Supply???

For a lathe there is a lot of inertia so a VFD should be sized the minimum of 2 Hp bigger than the motor rating you also want a Braking Resistor

For any VFD that is not rated for Single Phase then they need to have a Hp rating higher then the motor/spindle they are driving

It is single phase 220 through the VFD to three phase

VFD is rated for single phase

Your power supply is 240v, not 220v

    So Ground is Green

You need to connect the R Hot wire and T Hot wire terminals for the Input Power supply and you need to cover the White wire at both ends, Black or Red it can not be White as White is for Neutral

You have Terminals R S T input for this VFD only connect R and T and Ground

Ok moved the "S" to "T" and now ground "R" and "T" are connected.

Wire configuration is 220 volt single phase coming from house supply, it has a ground and two hot wires only, no fourth wire. I put that to a breaker box with all 3 going through separate 15 amp fuses, ground is grounded before the fuse to the machine. From there to a non fuse on off switch that was on the machine when I got it. From that to the VFD

From VFD to the Baldor 5HP motor 3 wires with the motor wired as low power per the motor tag.

I put in the parameters after changing to R and T. The VFD starts and says F100.0. Push run and the motor spools up but then dies when the clutch is powered on.

The spindle on the lathe moved freely by hand so the load on the start up doesn't seem like it is high.

The VFD was new when I got it and I only changed parameters that are on this thread. Should I do a factory reset and start over?

Ok do these changes and this will just make it as a standard 60Hz 3Ph motor it is

A Reset is only needed if you did other changes before that could be affecting how it is running now if you only set the Parameters I list then you would not have to do a Reset

Recheck the motor Low Voltage wire connections are correct

Your Power supply is 240V for NA not 220v yours may read 220v because you supply is low but the NA supply is 240v

Do you have a Ground from the motor to the VFD Drive Ground ???

    Ok did that.

Screen flashes F60.00 and it does spool up and turn but again with clutch powered it spins for a second and gives the E.OC.n error.

Also the pot on the front panel doesn't do anything, can't adjust the frequency with it anymore. (Did it with the last set of parameters too)

The whole machine frame is grounded with same earth ground and the motor is bolted to it. I could run a specific ground to the motor.

Just checked the motor low power wiring and it is intact.

And again, thank you very much for working this through with me

The Pot is a separate setting, when everything is set at 60Hz it won't change any speeds this was just a test to see if you could run it or not with a basic setting

How was it being run before or is this a new install for you

How much supply Amps do you have you will need around 35A to 40A

Something you could try put a meter on the input power supply and read what the power drop is when you engage the clutch

There still should always have a motor Ground wire connected either as at a star Ground point or directly with the Main supply Ground

Re: Huanyang Chinese VFD settings and manual here!

Looking at the fault possibilities for the E.OC.n posted I think it is #2 and #3. There is a sudden change in load as the clutch drops the load on the spinning motor all of a sudden and I think the VFD is too small even though it is listed at 5HP.

I would like to change plan for now but still get some advise.

I moved the VFD from my lathe project to my RF-31 CNC mill that also has a 3 phase 220 volt motor. It seems to work fine on the mill. The mill had a Leeson VFD and had some quirky startup issues, would sometimes not start until I unplugged it and waited some time.. I get all setup with Mach 3 get ready to push code start then the spindle wouldn't start randomly. I needed to replace it anyway.

Would you please post a set of parameters for that motor so I can use this VFD on the 2HP motor and order a stronger one for my lathe project?

    2HP
    1.5kW
    60Hz
    3 phase
    4 pole
    5.5/2.75 Amp

I would like it to be able to run from very slow to full speed using the knob on the front

Then to replace this one which was the Huanyang 5hp should I get the 7.5HP or the 10HP? And the newer GT version right? Or is there a different VFD company altogether that you feel may be a better choice? Will have the 5HP motor running all the time but clutch, brake, change parts on and off. Motor stays running but will have the sudden dropped clutch to turn the spindle then sometimes braking after clutch turned off to stop (Braking after clutch off though)

Nice addition to this thread, I read all of it and it mostly has to do with high speed spindles that are used most of the time with these VFDs

When you said you unplugged the VFD just doing this can damage the VFD Drive they should never be Plugged and Unplugged with a cord and Plug, if using manual control or computer control the VFD needs to power down and turned off with a disconnect switch

What type of lathe do you have and did you try starting the VFD Drive with the clutch engaged

The lathe is a new build made from an older large lathe, I'll post a picture.

I always let the VFD turn off when it is powering itself down.

I tried it with the clutch on and it works! I guess it was just the sudden load of the clutch that was the problem. I would like it to run variable speed and with the knob on the front for speed. Which parameters should I go with?

I could still use the clutch to disengage then brake on stopping.

I'll put on the first set of parameters you suggested and get back

Ok I set it up with these parameters. There was an error on start and it looked like it needed more time to spool up so I moved 14 and 15 from 15 to 25 and that worked.

It goes to 6000 and holds there.

What to change to give it control with the potentiometer on the panel?

Also I noticed there is a setting to let the VFD allow it to coast to a stop and with me using a brake it would be better to go from coasting to brake and not have the brake interrupt a controlled stop. Am I thinking of that right?

Nice feeling when something starts to work.
