Fanuc error 998 ROM Parity Error ???

Just bought a used 1990 Leadwell LTC-20CP lathe with a Fanuc OT control. Just powered up & get error 998 ROM PARITY ERROR, ROM NO 0E1, 0665-13

What is this & how to fix it ?, the manual lists the error but no remark on what to do.

    Thanks

ps. I don't know squat about the electronics side of cnc machines

    Cool rom chip

The rom chip contains the codes that the computer runs..if it is bad it needs to be replaced...the first thing you should check is your 5 Volts power supply..
It needs to be at least 5.2 Volts..if it is too low you can get all kinds of bad messages like the one you have..hope this helps

ok a bit more info on this machine.

    main board A20B-2000-0170/02A
    MEMORY BOARD A16B-1212-021 with a small square & then a rectangle ?? could be a A16B-1212-0210 ???
    series OTF
    software version 0665-13

I found a couple pics on the net of the boards I think, can't get to machine right now cause it's about 100km away & snow storm coming through. Friend out there did go & have a look at it & gave me #'s off the boards.

I read on one thread that it's possible the ROM chip(s) or board could be loose ? this machine has travelled a fair distance from original owner to machine tool sales company then to our location.

The back up batteries were replaced with no luck, 3 D size batteries.

Valmet58, Andy mentioned the 5 volt power supply. Would someone please explain what he means by this & how to check it.

Also is the ROM chips located on the memory board & if so how do I know which one it is ? The alarm states ROM No. 01E or O1E how do I know which one it is ?

Any help on this would be great

ED209: Try ,erase memory and then reload all PMC and NC parameters, also Macro programms(9000 and 8000). Make a back-up before erasing memory.

Thanks for the replies. Can't back up the parameters because you can't get past the alarm screen it comes up as soon as control powers up. I sent an email to the previous owner & hope they have a back up of the parameters. I do have hard copies in the electrical manual of the parameters but not sure if it's all there or how up to date they are. This machine was upgraded to a larger chuck 12" & thru spindle bore.

    Parameter list in electrical manual
    1 - 759
    900 - 919
    1000 - 2059
    8100 - 826
    D300 - D491

Macro progs ? I have a hard copy of O9001 to O9004 but no idea what they are for. See attached files.

So how do I erase the memory and reload it then ?
I found something about clearing memory on the Intelligent search technology and Information management solutions| Memex site please see attached file. Is this what you mean by erasing the memory ?.

    Thanks

Yes, Power up the machine pressing "Reset + Delete". This will erase all the parameters and programs. It is useless to do this if you don't have a back up copy. You must have a copy of parameters (NC + PC) on some paper, not in the manual. Parameters are very specific to the machine. You can contact MTB as they normally keep a copy with them. You should also have special parameters (900 ~940).

ok thanks humak16. We are going to check for loose boards or chips first. Then will try dumping the memory & reload parameters. I emailed the previous owner & they do not have back up copies of the parameters but he did say they lost them once & they used the ones from the electrical manual. There are penciled in changes in the parameter so I'm guessing they should be good.

Attached is a sheet that you can reference for restoring the Oseries control.

ok made an un-scheduled visit today after work to where the machine sits. Checked all plugs, boards & the ROM/RAM chips on memory board if loose, all seemed good. Powered control & got same screen (which locks up the control).

    998 ROM PARITY ERROR 0665-13
    ROM NO
    OE1

Then powered the control off & rebooted with the "Reset+Delete" buttons pressed & turned control power on & 988 error was gone but now have alarms

#100 (PWE enabled, I know how to fix this)
417 Servo alarm: X AXIS DGTL PARAM
427 Servo alarm: Z AXIS DGTL PARAM

I was able to get into all the parameters to view them & most were still there. 900's were all zeros as were most 300's. I didn't have machine parameter list with me (it's at home). Searched the forum and found some threads on this. Will go through all parameters & reset to list on Saturday & see what happens then.

If any advice is required please let me know.

Thanks for all the help so far

These alarm messages are normal when you erase memory. As a normal procedure, you should enter 900 optional parameters first and then the normal ones. 300 parameters are PC (Timer and Keep relay) parameters and are set by MTB. I can help you in setting 900 parameters if required.

Thanks humak16 I think I should be ok on inputting the parameters, one question in my hard copy parameter list I have D300-D??? these would be the 300 series parameters, in control just show up as 0300 or something like that, no D in front, would this be correct ?.

I also picked up a male Honda 20 pin connector MR-20s to connect to either M5 or M74 on the memory board for the RS232. This machine does not have a DB25 plug on it. It does have a honda plug on M5 & looks like it goes to a male Honda plug on the face of the control. I want to hook up the RS232 this weekend while I am out there. What I need to know is the Honda 20 pin to DB25 pin configuration. Then I want to connect machine DB25 to DB25 at pc. I found this thread http://www.cnczone.com/forums/fanuc/..._problems.html but not sure about the configuration for the OT C control.

The OM-D and the OT-C should have the same pinout as Dan posted in that thread.

ok gents we managed to finally get most of the parameters into this old girl, after many attempts. Would load parameters shut m/c down fire it up & get 998 alarm, clear memory & re-enter param's. Ended up loading 900's 1st (a few times) but had to change 4 of them back to what they were before someone had penciled in a different bit value 0 to 1 or a 1 to 0 on the list. We are not able to input the D300 param's in the DGN screen, you can enter the value for D300 =15000 hit enter & nothing it won't input ??? Is there a special key sequence that needs to be done ??

Set par 19 bit 7 = 1 to allow input of the diagnostics in the 'decimal' format instead of binary.
