    Talking Need help with Ultra3000i installation.....

    Hi guys,
    I'm still trying to get my head around the installation of this Allen Bradley drive and motor.
    I currently have stepper motors on the machine, I'm using a Galil DMC 2162 motion card with 2 ICM 2900's and Camsoft professional, the steppers work o.k, but very slow, so I'm attempting to connect this motor to prove the difference so we can purchase more servos.
    I recieved the cable from Rockwell, so now I have the Drive, Motor and cables.
    If I'm understanding this correctly,the motor and encoder are connected as per normal and I connect the wires from the ICM 2900 into the port CN1??
    my head hurts..........I've attached the relavent pdf files, could someone help me with how to hook this up, even if I am correct I'm unsure which wires to connect up?

    I believe these drives can be used in the stand-alone or from a controller, so I would imagine they have a simulated encoder output CN1? The analogue output from the ICM 2900 goes to the +-10 volt control to the drive and the encoder out from the drive goes back to the ICM2900 encoder input for the appropriate axis, if you have diagrams for the ports on the drives it might help here.
    Sorry I did not look far enough, it seems there is a resolver in from the motor and the CN1 has a simulated encoder output that goes to the ICM2900.
    The MOCMDX command goes to the Command signal in on the drive.

    Thanks for the reply, just so I don't confuse myself too much more, how many wires should there be going from the ICM 2900 to the Ultra Drive?
    When I look at the pic of the ICM 2900 it has 8 connections to the encoder A+,A-,B+,B-,Index +, Index -, and no I have no idea what they are, I can tell your shocked.
    Sorry to ask newbie questions.

    Also I would recommend using the buffered encoder output 16 to 21 on the CN1.

    I think I fully understand connecting the A+,A-,B+,B-,I+,I- once I sat down and had a good look at it they're fairly self explanitary, except for buffered or unbuffered terminals????
    I'm also still confused with the MOCMDX, you mentioned it goes to the command signal, I just noticed it has a Command + and a Command -, how should I wire this?

    OK off the bat there is misprints in the ICM2900, they have the encoder pin numbers right but if you notice the descriptions are all for the X axis for every encoder, so you have to go by the Mnemonic e.g. +MAY Y axis description reads X MAIN ENCODER A+, Instead of Y MAIN ENCODER A+.
    So here is the wiring as I see it for the X example.
    ICM2900..................................AB CN1
    BLOCK 3-1 MOCMDX .................25
    BLOCK 3-4 GND........................26
    BLOCK 19-2 +INX......................20
    BLOCK 19-3 -INX......................21
    BLOCK 19-4 GND.......................22
    BLOCK 20-1 +MAX....................16
    BLOCK 20-2 -MAX.....................17
    BLOCK 20-3 +MBX.....................18
    BLOCK 20-4 -MBX......................19

    Firstly I need to apologise for my incorrect info, I've since found out that our Ultra drive has a different port, I had trouble getting a connector for it, you guys know how it goes. blah blah blah.
    I've attached the PDF for the port
    Al the man I think I understand what you mean, I understand most of them but I thought I'd get your advise before I (attempt) to hook it up.
    ICM2900.......................... J1 on Ultra (Pin No.)
    BLOCK 3-1 MOCMDX ................CMND+(22)
    BLOCK 3-4 GND........................CMND-(23) (not too sure if this is correct)
    BLOCK 19-2 +INX......................IOUT+(11)
    BLOCK 19-3 -INX.......................IOUT-(12)
    BLOCK 19-4 GND...........................???? (not too sure on this)
    BLOCK 20-1 +MAX.....................AOUT+(7)
    BLOCK 20-2 -MAX.....................AOUT- (8)
    BLOCK 20-3 +MBX............. BOUT+(9)
    BLOCK 20-4 -MBX............. BOUT-(10)

    CMND- should be OK on J1-23 and the 19-4 goes to J1-(2)

    Thanks Al, I think I've got it, So can you tell that I'm scared I'm gonna blow it up????

    Except you have the CMND- going to the SIGZ instead of the ground terminal (4), All the connections otherwise appear correct, the ones you show all apply to the Z axis.
    I would suggest you also refer to the 100pin connector labeling in the DMC manual and also the schematic of the ICM-2900 its also in PDF format.
    The SIGZ is for stepper motors.

    So Al, are you sick of me yet?
    Thanks for all your help, I'll let you know how I go (hopefully I'll have good news).
    I'm keen to try the camsoft tuning software.
