cnc stepper motor force - please help

    hi there everyone!

i am building an cnc for hobby. i've made the controller board for usb, and one driver for stepper motor. tested them with an old fax stepper engine, and they work, but the problem is the motor force. i can easily stop it with my hand.
so i am planing to buy some new powerful motors, but i don't know what to choose.
i never faced the situation to measure the motor force in Nm... so i don't know anything about this
i saw some motors from nema, with holding toque of 1,8NM up to 12Nm, but how powerful is a motor that has a torque of 1Nm ? this is my main question...
the cnc machine will have 4 axles: x,y,z and a, for each axle i need a motor that is powerful enough to carry around 5-6 kg... what motor to choose in this case?
each axle has linear ball bearing for slide back/forward, and the engine shaft will be connected to an ordinary screw of 120cm.

i hope you guys can help me understand something from this.

    thank you very much!

You can use this page to convert nm to oz.in if that makes more sense to you. I would go for at least 250 oz.in motors.... that also depend on the speed and material you cut.... read read read.

download this free motor sizing program called Motioneering and enter your weights etc and it will calculate for you what size motor you need in any units including nm you want!
