    Question pocket maching with long 1/2 tool

    anybody knows the best way to machine pocket with 0.3 depth ,
    I can not use any big dia tools just 1/2 dia endmill or less and from top of part to top of pocket is 4.5", I tried several way and did not work,
    tried several speed and feed and still have problem on corner,
    any idea?! thanks

    try pre drilling out the corners, then with such a long tool maybe only step down .03 in depth each pass. then do 2 or more finish passes. i have had good luck with using solid carbide endmills that are long in over all length but only maybe have 1/2 inch of flute then are slightly under cut above the flute. they wont touch the walls above the pocket as much. this wont be a fast process.

    Plunge milling may help

    Write drilling/grid pattern and rough the pocket with plunge moves. The number of holes in x and y will determine the stopover, you can tweak this to be optimal. When you call the point drilling cycle and the cnc puts a spot drill and 1/2" drill in just erase the spot drill and change the drill to an end mill.
