    Angry G0704 Discontinued?

    I was convinced that I wanted a G0704 after reading all the posts by folks on this forum, and i just noticed it is discontinued!

    does anyone know the reason?

    Grizzly wasn't able to keep up with demand? Price was too low to be profitable? Too many problems with the motor controller? Warranty claims from motor controllers too costly?

    I like to speculate.

    Is it discontinued or did they just pull it from the site until they fix all the problems?

    I think you nailed it with the last two. It could also be that the manufacturers aren't fixing the problem to Grizzly's satisfaction. It's a shame- it's such a nice mill. Now I have to wonder if we'll be able to get parts.

    They should just knock a couple hundred off and sell it without the electronics

    I called today to find out the shipping date for my third motor replacement and was told the motor was back ordered and the estimated arrival date was April 27th.

    The operator had no idea if the mill has been discontinued but cited they were having website issues and that she wasn't able to bring up the mill either.

    I would have happily paid $200-$300 more for the mill had it come with a good motor. I hope the people who are responsible for the motor debacle lose their jobs.

    Apparently cheaper isn't always better...

    If they actually removed it for now it's for the better.
    Not a good thing to keep taking orders for something you can't keep in stock.
    Hopefully they are retooling and will be back with a better motor and controller but don't expect the same price.
    These mills are certainly worth the price of the lathemaster or precision mathews.
    they yanked their rf45 from the site because they couldn't keep up but it's still available in the catalog.
    Maybe they need a new webmaster that can figure out how to show a machine is backordered and not for sale at the moment.

    I shot them an email to see what's up with it and that I had wanted to order one this week only to find it gone.... I asked if they would be replacing it with a better/similar machine.

    Hopefully they will give forth with some useful info.

    I would imagine the mills they had planned for april deliveries are already on the boat.

    I've had my G0704 since July, 2010. Two weeks ago the motor shorted and blew the controller as well. I've been told it will be May before I get replacement parts. I found this alarming "discontinued" message on Grizzly's site today. Does anyone have suggestions for replacement board/motor if Grizzly cannot supply replacement parts????

    Chaps- take a look at this thread:

    And at the "Projects" Page on Hoss' site:

    I got a response

    They pulled it from the site to control backorders.

    I'm guessing (hoping) that it will be back when they have the supply chain sorted out.

    EDIT

    Is the (S)X3 a suitable replacement or should I pre-order a PM machine?

    I do desire the tapered gibs, and am under the impression that the G0704 and its ilk have a better fit and finish.
    Sugestions?

    Keep in mind that international shipping over on that side of the world is a bit of a mess right now in light of the recent earthquake and tsunami. I understand that these machines are coming from China, but I heard from a contractor I work closely with that a boat containing a large shipment of his steel has been temporarily halted because I could not enter the ports in Japan before coming over to the US. Or it was just a clever way for them to further justify the delay of their shipment

    I opted for a treadmill motor. I picked this one up for about $70 I think but as Hoss' stuff points out there is some additional work to make mounts for them. There seem to be a lot of treadmill motors out there that would work.

    Hey whiz...

    I used to have a treadmill motor on my old Shoptask 17-20 XMTC machine I used to own. It was a great little motor and had a bunch of speed which turned into torque when I geared it down with the original belt drive setup. It was really nice to also have infinitely variable speed. It turned my lathe setup on that 3 in 1 machine and made it much better to use. I would think that on that millhead it would be really great. What kinda spindle speed are ya getting on it? peace

    I borrowed a treadmill motor from a Sears Treadmill. It work great but the rotation is CW only. I'm having a problem figuring out how to ovecome this issue especially since I want to change to belt driven.

    @Pete-

    The motor itself will give 8000+ RPMs at 90V but until I figure out the various spindle/bearing issues I have been having, I haven't pushed it over 5K. I am hoping to finish it up soon and be able to do about 7000. The motor is a horse compared to the OEM one. Even at a 1:1 ratio it won't bog down at slower speeds.

    @Chaps-

    Why is the direction CW only? Does it have angled brushes?
