If I wanted to physically change the motor that is attached to a particular driver (Keling or Geko), is it safe to do after disabling the driver via control signal or must I remove power from the driver altogether?
Thanks,
BobL.

Unless the drive maker say you can, you will very likely kill your drive if you yank the motors while it's still powered.
The Geckodrive will not be damaged if unplugged while powered-up.
