    spindle and VFD recommendation

    Hi,

I am currently using a 2 HP wood router on my DIY cnc machine, I am currently looking into changing it to a 3 HP router and I started looking at VFD and speed control.

I saw a couple interesting production and I am wondering if anyone have experience or recommendation of what should be the best buy for my bucks.

    I am looking for
    1. a variable spindle for wood cutting from 8000-25000 RPM or around that.
    2. price around 400$-700$ lower if there any but I don't want to sacrifice quality for a fake bargain.
    3. something reliable and of good quality
    4. I have basic to moderate knowledge in electronic, I know how PWM and VFD work but preferable something easy to install and setup or work great together with a Gecko g-540 and Mach3.

the 2 options I have right now is the

Super-PID for controlling a standard wood router
    www.SuperPID.com - Super-PID Closed-loop Router Speed Controller

combined with a 3HP router like this one
Freud | 3-1/4 HP Plunge Router | Home Depot Canada

I do not know if the PID work as advertised and if it can compare to a VFD system.

my other option is to go with a spindle and VFD like the one Kelling offer:

CNC Spindle Controller - CNC Spindle
    i'd go for a KL-VFD15 and a KL-1500 HP spindle

downside is a heard those chinese VFD are garbage and I should buy the spindle but not the VFD, but I am not sure of the spindle quality and where to get a better vfd that will be compatible.

does anyone have recommendation on those or if I should go with another product I missed ?

i'd like to stick within the 400$-700$ price range and between 2-3HP router
it is for a machine that work about 4-5 hours per day.

    Thanks

Get a 2.2kw spindle from ebayer linear motionbearings2008 contact him through eBay but do not buy from eBay. I have him send me an invoice through pay pall and I get my stuff cheaper.

I would go with a water-cooled spindle, they can run indefinitely without overheating. I would recommend a hitatchi x200 VFD but I have also used the Chinese vfd that he offers and have not had a problem. The total price should be around 500 total and you can use 1/2" shank bits and lower.

Read the super-PID thread, which is filled with happy customers.

Does it compare with a VFD and spindle. Yes and no. A 2.2KW spindle probably has much more power than any handheld router.

If you want a spindle, do what was already mentioned. Buy the spindle on Ebay and get a Hitachi VFD. It should still be cheaper than the package Keling sells, for basically the same spindle and a better VFD.

I think spending $300 on a router is not the greatest investment. I would take a Chinese 2-3 hp spindle and Hitachi VFD over a 3 hp router.

I have a hitatchi router and a 2.2 kw spindle- I'll upgrade the router to another spindle ASAP. The Chinese spindles were not on the market when I did my first router. The spindles are quieter, more powerful at lower rpm, watercooled and sturdier than any router. If you have the money, just do it, you won't be disappointed.

thanks for the comments, i will go with a 2.2kw spindle from ebay and a hitachi x200 vfd

this look like the right one for a 2.2kw unless i missed something.

    https://i-store.hitachi.us/ISDWebSto...m=X200-022NFU2

unfortunatly hitachi store doesnt ship outside usa and I live in canada, anyone know where I could get one that ship to canada ?

is the the right vfd for a 2.2 kw spindle ?

and finally was else would be needed to make it work with mach3 ? it look like the hitachi vfd can easily be interface using modbus

    regards

I was also looking at the Hitachi VFDs and one thing that I always wondered about was the difference in the input voltage. I do not have 200VAC-220VAC but they make a 110VAC unit, will the 110 version work as well as the 220 version?

Well, the 110VAC input ones look like they only go up to 0.75kW output power, so it wouldn't work for a 2.2kW spindle... But if you only wanted the 0.8kW spindle it would probably work fine.

A 220 line is just like running a dryer line. You could even run a 12 gauge 3 wire romex- the type used for regular outlets- exept this would be dedicated to the spindle only.

My setup is a double pull 20 amp breaker to the romex then to a 220 switch in a juction box. The junction box goes to a 220v outlet. The vfd is then wired with a flexible wire and the corresponding plug.

It might sound complicated but it is really simple, basic wiring.
