Just begining to plan a build, looking for input

    Hello guys,
I have been lurking here for a few weeks, reading up and trying to learn as much as I can. For a while I have been wanting to build a CNC router. So I think it is time to formally begin to form a plan and start buying parts in the next few months.

I have been doing a bunch of searches, but there is so much information for a newb such as myself. So I thought I would come and ask for guidance as to which way to look...

My long term plan is to use the CNC Router to A. Make some nice 3D Wood Carvings and accents for our home design.. and some for sale possibly in the future. Also, I would like to use the router to do some light Aluminum milling for making brackets and various items I will need when I start working on my V8 Miata in a couple years.

I Think I would like to have a 4x4 gantry setup. That would be big enough to do the largest items I could want for our house and not so big as to need a garage by itself.

I have been doing some looking and I think I would be best to try for a 4 axis design so it can do full 3d carving.

Am I on the right path? Is there a ready made plan that covers my design needs? Can this be done for less than $2k and done well if I do all the work?

I have the skill to do it, just not the knowledge currently

    Thanks!
    Randy

I would plan on spending $3000-$4000, plus software.

    Here are some plans:
