Job Title: Laboratory Engineer Technician
Location: San Diego, CA, US

Brief Description
The technician's primary responsibilities will be related to the operation, maintenance, and safety assurance of the equipment in the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) laboratories, the Mechanical Engineering (ME) laboratories, and to a lesser degree the Electrical Engineering laboratories. The technician will be expected to support related activity in all Engineering laboratories as assigned by the Department Manager.

Detailed Description
The technician's primary responsibilities will be related to the operation, maintenance, and safety assurance of the equipment in the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) laboratories, the Mechanical Engineering (ME) laboratories, and to a lesser degree the Electrical Engineering laboratories. The technician will be expected to support related activity in all Engineering laboratories as assigned by the Department Manager.
- Manages, maintains, and repairs all ME and ISE shop equipment, including manual and CNC lathes and mills and other standard tools and machinery related to machining, woodworking, welding, rapid prototyping, automated manufacturing, laser cutting, injection molding, and sheetmetal fabrication.
- Manages, maintains, and repairs all specialized ME and ISE laboratory equipment related to robotics, PLCs, and discipline-specific lab equipment.
- Assist with manufacturing-related labs, under the guidance of the lab instructor, including clear and concise student instruction on safe and effective shop practices, CNC code generation and use, machine operations, and shop professionalism. Currently, the Department uses Surfcam to generate most CNC code.
- Provide technical support to students with class-related projects, under the guidance of the instructor, including the safe and efficient planning of fabrication processes, and supervision of students in the shop outside of class time.
- Serve as the safety liaison for engineering faculty, staff, and students, maintaining general safety of laboratory environments in accordance with OSHA practices, USD's Risk Management, and safety procedures approved by the Department Manager. Provide safety training to ensure students and faculty are aware of and follow safe lab practices. The Engineering laboratories pose substantial safety risks. Improper use of equipment in any lab can cause severe shock, injury, or can be life threatening.
- Perform and document special projects as defined by faculty or staff and approved by the Department Manager, including design and manufacture of laboratory devices.
- Orders items as needed and requested by the Department Manager and faculty via purchase orders and credit card. Generates related monthly reports.
- Assist in computer and software maintenance primarily related to ME and ISE programs.
- Assist in the supervision and training of student workers as assigned.
- Keep an inventory of record of department machines and instruments using a database program.

Reports to and receives general supervision from the Engineering Department Manager. Exercises supervision over work-study and other student or hired personnel as assigned.

Job Requirements
Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or related technical discipline.
or Associates Degree with 3 years of relevant experience
or previous work experience in an Engineering Lab, either from a University/College, Civilian or Military Environment.

Knowledge:
Considerable knowledge of:
CNC milling machine set up, operation and safety.
CNC lathe set up, operation and safety.
CAD/CAM software.
OSHA practices as applied to a laboratory environment that included cutting machines and commensurate hazardous materials.
Working Knowledge of:
Microsoft Office
Machine programming.
Robot set up, operation and safety.
Basic power tools (e.g. band saw, drill press, grinder, etc.) and hand tools
Metrology including calipers and gauges
Interfacing computers to machines and laboratory equipment
Ladder logic programming software.
Electrical circuits.
Personal protection and safety in a workshop environment.

Skills:
Operation of NC/CNC machines, hand tools to fabricate devices for instructional and research use.
General mechanical aptitude that will allow the technician to develop original solutions to problems encountered by students and faculty.

Abilities:
Ability to learn to operate new equipment and software from manuals and short courses
Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students including the ability to explain the proper use of laboratory equipment and facilities.
Ability to organize effectively several assignments and to prioritize activities.
Ability to safely conduct University practices in the labs and to effectively stress safety-first practices to students.
Ability to creatively design, fabricate and implement unique mechanical apparatus.
Ability use power tools accurately and safely to make certain that teaching and research goals are met.
Ability to represent the University in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers, and the community we serve.
Ability to get along with diverse personalities and populations.
Ability to make independent judgments when making decisions.
