    Advice for Servo and Controller for this radial Drill Machine

    Hi,
    I want advice from you guys for converting the Radial Drill Machine to CNC... Currently I am thinking of using MITSUBISHI 2.2KW Servos and matching drives..
    I will fabricate the Bed and install linear rail... The radial Arm length is 1600mm..


    Is 2.2KW servos are enough? Any thoughts?

    As i have no experience with Servos..and especially converting this machine is a big job for me..and it bad experience will get my carrier down... But i will take the risk with the help of you guys..
    I figured out the length of BED= 1800mm x 1600mm
    Also the Weight of the bed it has to carry = 2000Kg

    I checked that the Motor at the Top of the Column is 3 Phase 2 KW AC motor.. and it can raise the whole ARM along with the Heavy spindle with 70IPM ...I have seen this.. About Diameter: 2 inch ACME screw get the whole Arm Load up and down very easily..

    There appears to be gearing between the motor and the Z axis screw, which is to be expected.
    How are you thinking of driving the table, are you implementing an X & a Y axis?
    I suggest you use a sizing program such as the Kollmorgan pgm to assist you.

    Thanks AL for help.. You are right their is some gearing that increase the torque of that motor...

    The X-axis will be the Spindle Carraige on the Radial Drill Arm..
    The Y-axis will be the Table Bed...
    The Z-axis will be the Quill..

    Now the Spindle carriage has dove tail guide ways and very easily movable on the Radial Arm...Also the Quill can be very easily controlled with the help of Feed Shaft through smaller sized servo.. My big concern is the table bed that will carry about 2Ton (2000Kg of weight)...
    I have to implement this CNC system and retrofit this radial mill within 40 days of time...
    We have a large Stainless Steel Baffles drilling job coming containing 3529holes (19.50mm dia final) for 20mm thick SS plates (Qty-20 Ea)..
    We will make the 5-piece bundle of those baffles and will be drilled with this CNC..

    Any suggestion and help will keep me relax .. Again I am newbie to servo systems and i need a lot of help from you guys..

    The CAPEX has been approved for this machine and i have to start working.. This is also one of the objective of this year.. Lets see at the end of year should i be able to drill some holes

    Khalid, A radial drill with an X-Y axis table arangement similar to yours was sold years ago with the brand name of Volstro (I believe). Many were sold for drilling boiler tube plates and other flat workpieces such as machine side frames.

    They worked well in their day.

    Our team with Khalid's help have successfully converted this radial drill into CNC. Initial tests and calibration is complete. We'll do the trial run today. I'll post the details with photos in a separate thread.

    Indeed this project need expert and dedicated guys like you.. This is not only conversion but the modification of the complete drill machine..it was not a piece of cake because the manufacturer of the machine has also responded that this machine can not be convertible to CNC... With M/s Zafar Enterprize dedication and hard-work the project was completed...
