How to make serrations for jaws

    Hi,

I need to make new serrated jaws for our lathe.

I was wondering if anyone here had experience doing these ?

I tried a few cutters at the shop but they have a small flat at the bottom, I can't seem to get the serrations right*.

Any suggestions on which angle cutters to use without a flat ?

    Thanks,

    Pharkas

Get a 1.5MM pitch thread mill ( assuming you are dealing with that pitch on a Kitagawa chuck ) and just side cut them.

I had a 4" dia carbide tipped slitting saw gound Years and years ago ( still have it too). then milled them we only made our own jaws when we forgot to order them as its not worth the set up and time to make a set , Pie jaws on the other hand is worth makeing them. if you use lots of pie jaws.
I know guys that make them with 60º engraving endmills and they work fine they take 2 pass's with seperate tools( one rough leaving .010 and a finish) so the sharp V is correct.
