depth of cut for an end mill is based on many factors like

1) length of end mill sticking out of collet
2) what material you are cutting (aluminum or stainless steel)
3) SFPM and thus rpm you are running at
4) chip thickness or Feed rate

using a 50% DOC depth of cut on a long end mill on stainless is a sure way to break end mills
