    What size gear belts for stepper gear reducer?

    I'm in the process of designing the main drives for my plasma table, and I'm not quite sure what size belts I should use for the gear reducer.
    The table will be 5X5, and I'm using 16 pitch 3/4 wide rack and pinion. I need to make a 3:1 gear reducer to go in between the stepper motor and drive pinion using a gear belt.
    I'm looking at using XL belts and sprockets, but I'm concerned that the 3/8 width of the belt will not be sufficient.
    I was really wanting to use a belt about 3/4 wide, but that is only available in an "L" belt, and that would make my sprockets too large.
    Thanks for any info.

    I can't help any, but I am watching for an answer, since I'm planning on building belt reductions for my plasma table. I've been planning on using 3/8" XL belts since I've seen others using them, but if there's a better option I'm open.

    I was searching my "junk" pile, and found 5 brand new 170xl belts !! Now that I've actually held one in my hand, I think they will be fine. The sprockets for the XL belts are a way cheaper than the larger "L" size also.
    I needed a 3:1 ratio, so I ordered three 16-tooth, and three 48-tooth sprockets.

    Would you mind sharing what you bought and where? (since 3:1 is exactly what I was planning as well)

    I live in Canada, so I don't have near as many places to buy this stuff as you would.
    The part numbers are the same though;
    small gear-Part# 16XLB037
    large gear-Part# 48XLB037

    Google those numbers if you want pics.
