I have built a machine very similar to the "Shopbot" (4x8). I currently use Mach 2 to control it and program it with Gcode in a text editor. I have tried several cad programs but they seem to lose something when converting to Gcode. I use my machine for basic wood working projects, mostly 2d, cabinet building etc.and the Shopbot control software along with Artcam Part Wizard(which is available for purchase on their web site)is perfect for my use. Is there anyone who knows if its possible to use the Shopbot control software to control a home made machine,( I know they use firmware in their control box), or is there another path I should take?

If you're having a problem converting from CAD to g-code, then you are either doing something wrong, or need a better CAM program. If you let me know what kind of problems you're having, maybe we can help you out.

You should look into SheetCAM. http://www.sheetcam.com SheetCAM and any cheap CAD program will do everything the ShopBot Partwizard will do except the Vcared fonts, for less than 1/2 the price. There's a SheetCAM contest going on right now, you could even win a copy.

I'm pretty sure the Partwizard software will only write Shopbot files, not g-code, and I'm also pretty sure the Shopbot Controller software will only work on a shopbot.
