sandvik or iscar
check into kennametal beyond or seco duratomic grades.
i love the 1125 grade of sandvik personally, ran dry.
I really like Sandvik's grades for 304...but it depends on whether you're turning or milling! And depends on roughing, finishing...etc.
Some of their grades are insert specific.
As Shane mentions...they do like dry better, and you have to have the horsepower and rigidity to get your money's worth out of 'em. They LIKE to be worked.
(had a Sandvik rep tell me he liked the 4 sided turning inserts better...So I don't fully trust everything they say. With a WNMG I get 2 extra edges for essentially the same price.)
horse power and rigidity not a problem
turning in a lathe
roughing and finishing
and you run it dry?
I am running it in a bar feeder
if you run dry how do you hold size with all the heat?
when i run my wnmg 432 rougher, i run it at g96 s450 with .08 to .1 depth of cut, feed of .012 per rev. all the heat goes with the chips buddy i leave .01 to .015 for a finish pass and use a finishing insert for final size. sometimes i run coolant, sometimes i dont, but i only run the finish at .005 per rev for feed, but g96 s650 for rpm my rougher lasts longer than my finisher 99.99% of the time, usually only change corners on the rougher inserts about 2 times a week.
