3 phase transformer - on single phase?

I am retrofitting two Boss5 machines. Can a 3 phase transformer be used with single phase? Could I "chop" off the third leg coils?

    Thanks

Not really practical, is it 3phase out? What is it the transformer feeding? Often the low power control can easily be converted to run off 120 or 240 1ph and the high power is usually either spindle and pump motors and/or servo's. What is there presently on the machine that is three phase?

The main transformer is 3ph in/out. I thought I could save a few bucks by reusing whatever possible from the machine. I am retrofitting with Gecko's/Mach3, and want to run the DC bus at ~50V. Theres a whole bunch of transformers in the machine, maybe I will just toss them.

    Thanks

If they are single phase transformers in the machine, I would check before tossing as they may come in usefull for other supplies.
