    New G0704 - CNC Conversion

    Hi,

After years of interest in owning a CNC mill, I bought a G0704 off of Grizzly that should ship late February. I have absolutely zero experience in machining, and this will mainly be for hobby work in my garage.

So far I have very minimal on order:
    1. G0704
    2. Hoss' Phase 1 and Phase 2 Plans

Here are some questions that I currently have, and am researching. If anyone can help me fill in the details that would be great

What will I need to set the mill up?
    -Dial Test Indicator

What would be a good vise for this mill?
    -Shars
    -Glacerne
    -Kurt

Things I would like in the future:
    DRO
    4th axis

What is an effective and inexpensive power drawbar setup?

Current items I am interested in are the CNC Fusion Deluxe CNC kit, and Hoss Heavy Duty Digital electronics listing.

I would certainly appreciate any input to help speed things along and get me educated

    feederic,

I am still going through this process myself, but be prepared to buy lots of tooling to start with. Hoss's site g0704.com has a button "Accessories" that provides a bunch of links to starter sets and tooling. Personally, I purchased the LMS starter mill package and the LMS starter measuring package.

The starter mill package has a vice in it ... not the best vice, but I figured it would be a good start for a beginner like me. The measuring package has a dial test indicator in it.

In addition to the above, I bought a zero set indicator holder (mentioned by Hoss in his tramming videos) and 0.75" drill rid to use for tramming. I expect to buy a boring head, drill bit set, and iGaging DRO scales over the next month or so.

Since I needed so much stuff to get started, my philosophy has been to get the inexpensive starter stuff and then replace it with higher-quality stuff down the road (or when I break something).

Oh ... find a local supplier for aluminum stock if you can. Start stocking up on that.

    Hope this helps,
    slinger

Great info! I'll be looking into some starter mill packages now that you point them out. And I am on the aluminum supplier

    Welcome to the club Feederic!
AFAIK cncfusion doesn't have their kit ready for sale yet for the g0704, it's only been 2 years.
this is a quick and dirty power drawbar that can be adapted.

    I'll have mine out soon.
I have light duty versions here.

I emailed cnc fusion earlier this year and they told me the kit was ready, the website only had to be updated. Of course I do not know the whole truth if they are ready or not.

I will consider both of these power drawbars.

I think I have a handle on the basic conversion in terms of needs. I can use some advice on the different possibilities on a 4th axis kit if anyone can help out.

If you are just going into a garage the crate is pretty easy to slide and wiggle around.
If you look at the first several pics here, http://www.g0704.com/#pics I was able to get it off the truck, down the steps
and into the house on my own. I put a ratchet strap around it to give me a handhold for pulling.
    Good Luck, Hoss

I was actually just looking at those pics to see how you did it. I will pick up a strap tonight or tomorrow, and hopefully won't find I need much more. Luckily its only sliding up the driveway into the garage.

I was and am able to grunt mine around manually with no help or tools. At 50 YO I do feel it the next day but it can be done.
