    Z axis trouble while initializing?

I just hooked up a new cutting torch to my plasma cam DHC2. I went with the hypertherm powermax 65. Everything went smooth with hook up, the plasma cam found the torch right away. When I proceeded to initialize the machine, it moved to home like always, but the Z axis will not find home. The machine moves to the corner of the machine with the x and y axis, but it will not move up and down on the Z. Hard to explain because if I slide the table out and move the Z axis down, then initialize, the machine picks up the torch with the Z moves it to home on the x and y, but then with not fully finish the Z axis positioning. If I put my hand on the Z axis motor I can feel it trying to move, it actually feels like it is moving extremely slow. ON the computer screen the initialize tells me that the machine is still traveling??? I am not sure where to go, or what to check? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
