    Motor Inductance & Resistance (DCtool settings)

    I am wondering if anybody can point me in the right direction

    I am retrofitting a Boss8 servo driven bridgeport.

    The only servo information I have on these motors is on the name plate. (servos are Powertron 402CNSP0S72 14.2A - 58.xA peak - 146V - 30'lb)

    I am wondering if I can determine the correct DCtool settings for these motors on my own.

    For the resistance value, can this be measured with a multi meter?

    Is there some equation I can use to calculate the correct Inductance?


    I have the motor and encoder connected to the drive and am able to run the "test". The motor does move for a second then stops. I am able to hold the motor shaft with my hand and stop it from moving during this test.

    After talking with a few people it seems the best thing i can do for inductance value is look at similar motors and use the inductance they are rated for. (4-5)

    I measured the resistance across the armature terminals at 1.8 ohms so that was simple enough.

    Went thru my encoder wiring, found a mistake. I am lucky the mistake i made did not cause any damage. After sorting that out the tests were working as they should.

    After playing around with the PID parameters and looking at the scope results i think it might be better/easier to get the servo settings tuned initially with gdtool instead of dctool.

    going to flash back to standard firmware and try tonight.

    I also read thru Manuals / Guides Home

    Seems like the best tuning resource i have found for a newbie

    You're doing good job there! Looking motor inductance from similar size & voltage & power motor is a good way to get estimate of it. The graphs you posted shows properly tuned system.
