ArtCam/ Artcam Express IMPORT (STL file)

This request for help is for anyone using ArtCam but if you are familiar with model railroading and using either Artcam or ArtCam express you may better understand what I'm trying to accomplish.

I have a file created in to full scale. (Autocad Inventor). I would like to import this into Artcam and create toolpaths for a CNC router. I need to reduce it to model size.

When I attempt an import - (Reliefs-import 3D) I've yet to get a consistent display. I've tried High Resolution etc. When I zoom in on it it looks like teeth sitting up not clean vectors.

My hope is to take this full size part that is an STL file and import it and scale it to N scale 1:160 and then create toolpaths to cut the part.

My head hurts from the brick wall I've been beating it against.

My hope is to justify not having to use a friends software and hardware and create my own Artcam files and use a CNC to cut them. Right now I'm not convinced that the above approach will result in the parts I'm hoping to create.

Any help is appreciated but I might take a few days to reply as I have to go across town to access the software etc (the reason I want to get my own software and CNC.

If you want to "experiment" I can send you the STL file.

You might want to download a demo of MeshCAM. It's main function is creating g-code from .stl models. MeshCAM - CNC Software - CAD/CAM Software

The demo is fully functional for 30 days.

    Quite simple steps
open new model to size you want with origin to center
From the drop down relief menu select import 3d model
select the stl file you need and hit open
the Paste 3d model box will open, switch to the 3d view for visual aid

In the bottom of the Paste 3d box set the model size or scale you require
Click the center button then paste button to complete.

If you still have problems you can email me and send the file

    Hi there,

I'm having the exact same problems as described above. lower resolution-style 'teeth' along the outer profiles.

Did you ever solve this problem with Mesh cam?! I'll post a solution if i ever find one!!

    Cheers,

    Jw

Found what i was looking for!

    Before importing your 3D Model:

    Menu Bar

    Model> Adjust Resolution.

The software has a limit to the complexity of the model but this will help. If you need a higher level of detail than this, I recommend slicing your model into smaller piece to generate your tool paths from.

My .stl file was 1500 x 500 x 50mm thick but notching the Adjust Resolution setting up to max. made all the difference.
