Anybody kept the stock lead screws in their manual mill to CNC conversion?

There is one on G3201 a few years ago, but no more update on the performance. I thought if keep the stock lead screws, and adjust the backlash and map the a screw accuracy in the software, the conversion would be much easier for those don't have a second mill and other precision tools.

I did that on my RF31 and found out the bronze nut quickly wore out. It ended up so bad that you can walk the nut down the leadscrew without rotating either one. I found I would be adjusting the backlash screw daily. Yes I had also put an one shot oiler on the screw/nut so it was not running dry.

Thanks Bubba. Any chance a better material nut will survive?

I would have thought it would have lasted longer. The Y nut did pretty good, but it also was wearing faster than I thought it should. Could be I just got a bad run???

    Thanks Bubba
CNC machining moves a LOT LOT more than manual mill. I think that is why?

The performance would also be poor. Ballscrews would give you 2 to 4 times for speed.

The nut design on the Rf-31/45 is really poor for wear with only a few threads to remove backlash and the nut is a fairly soft bronze.

The nuts on the G704 and Weiss 30 are cast iron running on a steel screw plus the adjustment system is much better. I think if you could leave one or two thow backlash they would last much longer than the RF nuts.

The Weiss type of nuts just might be OK for a few hundred hours of use and I bet some on the Zone have extra nuts you might pick up for free.

The Z is still a problem because you need the efficiency of the ball nuts or at least a big pulley.
