When tuning the Gecko drives (the low speed tuning described in the manual), should that be done with the motor actually engaged on the machine, or just turning in free air?
This tuning is about assuring that the microstep sizes within
a full step are as nearly equal as possible. It may be done
on the machine or on the bench with no load. It may be
slightly easier to hear the effect with no load present.
Unequal microstep sizes will cause vibration, but it is not
the same thing as the "mid-band resonance damping" that
is provided by Gecko stepper drivers. The later requires
no adjustment except for the "large motor" setting via a
jumper or switch depending on the model of driver.
Tuning servos, on the other hand, needs to be done on
the target machine because inertia and friction will
affect the adjustments.
