I have been asked to make a simple sign, but designing the lettering is eluding me.

The customer is looking for white letter with a blue outline.

I need to cut two pieces of acrylic for each letter. A blue background letter, and a white foreground letter. The white will be glued to the blue so that 1/4" of blue will be visible as an outline.

Is there an easy way to create the letter shapes for this?

I have VCarve Pro 6.5, and SketchUp for drawing the letters.

I got an answer on the Vectric forum.

It's easy to do using the Offset Vector tool.

This technique is very easy and should be used more often.

Perhaps you'd consider making the top color from cut vinyl. I'm not too keen on having both letter and background the same thickness. I often use Dibond, HDU, PVC and vinyl in combination.

Most of my signs have this technique.









One note of caution. A white letter on a blue background can be trouble with some fonts. That's because it automatically make you read the outline and not the lettering.
