    Carbide Insert Question

    Hello all,

I'm not an expert when it comes to the huge variety of carbide inserts that are available, but have had pretty good success with the several types that I've used over the years. I just came into a large quantity of Kennemetal CNMG-323K inserts so thought I'd give them a try. I purchased an MCLNR123B holder (made in the US) which I believe is the correct tool for these inserts. My problem is that I can't seem to get even a reasonably good cut with this setup. Facing or turning - both yield a poor finish. I've tried adjusting the tool height, angle, speeds, feeds, etc. I know my lathe is capable of making good cuts - just not with these inserts. It seems too simple so I must really be doing something wrong.

    Thanks,
    MotoDan

Perhaps the wrong insert for the material?

Forgot to mention that the insert grade is KC990 which looks to be for cutting carbon and alloy steels as well as ductile irons. Can the grade really make that much difference? If so, then this must be why my aluminum is not machining well.

Just remembered that we also tried cutting some 12L14 leaded steel with less than desirable results.
