    770 or 1100

Ok guys its the tired question of 770 versus an 1100.

For my needs I will be making mostly automotive parts out if 6061. From time to time I will need to cut stainless. Most of these parts will be less than 12" on any dimension. Most of the time smaller.

I like the speed of the 770 and the physical size and 110 power. However, I am thinking long term the 1100 offers more flexibility for working space and torque.

I did see one of the other guys is getting positive results with Makinta attached spindle in his 1100. Very cool.

I am also considering 4th axis to do internal or external threading on round or hex stock.

Any thoughts from the Tormach owners?

    Thanks... Kevin

What size cutters are you going to be running? Are you doing lots of bulk material removal, or mostly finishing?

Will mostly be finishing work. The bulk removal will be mainly to square up stick or bore larger holes.

I can see lots if tapping, finishing and smaller countours for trim pieces etc.

Other parts will be brackets and custom fittings with external threads.

You sound like we maybe on a similar track. I want one for building custom pieces for my 65 Chevelle wagon.

Go with the 1100. You won't regret it.
You can buy GOOD PARTS or you can buy CHEAP PARTS, but you can't buy GOOD CHEAP PARTS.

I second that. Steve is right on.
I liked mine so well I bought a second one. And I don't regret that one either.

    Re: 770 or 1100

I have a 1100, know a guy with a 770, I said 770 because the OP said 6061, which a 770 will run laps around a 1100. 770 is the best choice for an aluminum only machine.

sometimes simple solutions are the best solutions

you cant go wrong with getting one (or more) of each...
then you would truly have the best of both worlds...
see simple solutions are always the best

hey, it looks like one (or more) of each isn't a poll option, must of just been an oversight, anyway, someone should fix that...

For lighter cuts, I think. My hangup is that I run out of horsepower when hogging 6061, and the 770 has less horsepower.

I have a 770. It really hauls butt thru aluminum. I've done 50 ipm at .1 doc with a .25" endmill, full slot, 10K rpms, no problem. I use a fogbuster coolant system.

If you are doing a lot of little things and need spindle speed, and the travels are sufficient for you, get the 770. If you need travel, get the 1100.

I wouldn't have minded the 1100, but I am very happy with my 770. The 1100 would never have fit in my space. I only have a 10' 6" x 11' 6" shop and I have a lot of other equipment in it already.

Take care and good luck in your choice,

    Wade

Hello guys. Thanks for all the feedback. I had the opportunity to visit a Z-Bot (Tormach Dealer) in Austin yesterday. I have placed my order for an 1100. So I am off to clear a space in my garage.

    Thanks...Kevin

I got the 1100 and have 0 regrets now that I have the Kress companion spindle. I've got my machine spinning at 29k RPM with a 1/32" 3 flute bit doing some fine work in aluminum.
