Wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any nesting software for solidworks 09 or autocad 08 or even stand alone thats not to pricey.

i have tried Astra S Nesting and found it really good but looking for some thats free if possible.

What are you nesting, and what type of machine is it for?

    Looking at doing

    Hi Again People

I'm looking at nesting 2d profiles mainly then exporting to DWG/DXF then making the gcode from that or giving the DWG/DXF to sub contractors for what i need to make.

like i said i liked Astra but was wondering if there there was anything free out there or if there is anything that could do it for me for next to nothing.

    Thanks for any help anyone.

if i had to nest 3d that would take a but longer but i'm sure i could work round it somehow.

You didn't really answer my question. Are these wood parts? metal parts? What exactly are you cutting?

Finding something for free is unlikely.

Most often, nesting is done in a CAM program, and the toolpaths and g-code are done at the same time as the nesting.

Not sure why you'd want to nest in one app, then export into a CAM program.

SheetCAM has nesting, and looks like it has plugins to run some other nesting software inside of it.
Vectric's V-Carve Pro also has nesting.

CamBam can do basic 'Array' style nesting, along with some manual variations and can be used for free if you don't intend to use its CAM facilities beyond its trial period. CamBam - Index

The cheapest true style nesting that I have found with features like automatic rotation and part within a part etc, is Ucancam.
It works well and can be exported via DXF to your chosen CAD/CAM package if that works better for you. http://www.ucancam.com/en.asp

Please check the Promotions page on our website.

(I am new to this forum and was unable to include the link to the page in my first attempt while replying. But you may search for our nesting software MOST 2D, say on Google and download the older version from the promotions page. It is free and it supports nesting as well as toolpath generation functions for oxyfuel / plasma / laser / waterjet cutting.)

Perhaps try our MyNesting solution - free to download and use but you just pay a small fee ($5-$7.50) for the whole job if you want to export back out to dxf (i.e. doesn't matter how many sheets).

If you need to nest more frequently or don't like subscription based services, then we have a buy-once version of MyNesting called NestFab which has enhanced features for export and generation of production reports.

There is a full-feature 7-day unlimited trial of NestFab on the website (so if you've only got a couple of jobs to get through, get the trial and your nesting will be completely free - probably shouldn't say that! )
