what to take into consideration when calculating tool speed and feeds

    hi,

im trying to do a excel spreadsheet on calculating tool speeds and feeds for milling using all different tools, with different materials etc.

but i dont actually know how to do any calculations at all, lol, so can anyone please point me in the right direction of what information i will need from simple tool speed feed calculations to type of material it may be cutting and type of cutter e.g tip, carbide etc.

i know this is a big ask and im not im willing to do the research, just dont know where to start or look

    any information is muchly appreciated

    thanks

    P

Machinist Handbook has a lot info in it.

A quick formula for calculating Surface Speed is: SFMP X 3.82 \ dia = RPM.

Example you want to run a 0.5 inch end mill at 500 sfpm. So it would be 500 X 3.82 \ 0.5 = 3820 RPM.

Now to figure out the feedrate you need to know how many flute the e/m is.

Lets say it's a 4 flute and you want a 0.003 chip load per tooth.
    0.003 X 4 = 0.012. Now you times that buy RPM. So .012 X 3820= 45.84.

For a the speeds and feed for materials and diferent types of tools. You need to get a machinist hand book cause there are thousands.

    Good luck.

oh excellent, cheers, ill get myself one of those books and see whats what, i looked on amazon for the book and i found machinerys handbook 28th edition, is this what you meant as its pretty pricey, would a older edition do?

    thanks again

e2a: actually the book isnt that expensive, for some reason the came up at £66 but found them at 20 odd, think one was hardback and other paper, can live without it been hardback, but still my question stands,

Machinery's Handbook has all the tables and machinibility factors to cover all common materials and machining techniques. That said, there are speed and feed spreadsheets and calculators on the internet. You just have to search for them.

    Or try this:

No idea what is happening to the ZIP file on upload. Try this:
