    Just starting out

Hi all I am just new to this and would like to know where do I start.
I am keen in building my own machine to do some projects I have in mind but have no idea where to start.
I am on a limited budget and will have to build it over a little time.
Do I need to build my first one with all the computer and other stuff?.
Any help would be great as I am keen to get going.

I guess the first place to start would be to figure out what projects you want to make, and then figure what machine to build or buy from that.

What are you thinking of doing with the machine?

    G'Day and welcome to cnczone

There are several types of linear drive systems that you could possibly use in a cnc machine, leadscrew, ballscrews, rack and pinion etc, they all have pros and cons and some are suited better to certain types and sizes of machine. You really need to decide on a few things before deciding on the types of components you are going to use.

1 What do you plan on building, cnc router?/ cnc mill? / cnc plasma cutter etc ?
2 What size machine do you require?
3 What materials are you going to machine?
4 What resolution / speed requirements etc do you have?
    5 What is your budget?

If you answer these questions I could probably point you in the right direction.

If you have questions you will probably find that others have already asked them.
Look through older posts that's were all the good info is to be found, use the keyword search tool to narrow down your searches. If you can't find what your looking for start a new thread.

Beware, these projects have a tendency to never end up finished.
Also its hard to build a desktop cnc router for less than 2000 AUD.
I would have been better off financially if I had bought a complete cnc system at the start, however I have learned so much researching and building my own machine i believe it was worth it (my wife would disagree).

You will also need a computer, a power supply, a breakout board and drives for each axis to control steppers or servos that power each axis.

    Good luck

    Nikki
