Good flood coolant that doesn't cause rust?

    Hi,

I am wanting to start using the flood cooling on my mill but I remembered that last time I used flood cooling it started to rust my bed, vice etc. and that was in dry Arizona! Now I am in the midwest and have to have something better at fighting rust as the basis of my coolant. What are the best econimial options?

    Thanks

    God bless...

What concentration were you diluting the coolant? Many times the manufacturers recommendations are to dilute 1 in 20, i.e. a 5% mixture. This may be perfectly okay for cooling and lubricating the cutting tool but when the water evaporates away there is not enought coolant film left on metal surfaces to prevent rusting. Boost the concentration to somewhere between 10 and 15% and there should be no rusting.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.
