Hey, just a general question on coolant pressure (I guess mainly on thru-the-spindle/tool coolant) ...

...how much can I expect tool life to be improved, with everything else being equal, when going from 100 psi to 300 psi? Or how about 300 psi to 1000 psi?

I have to write a justification to get 1000 psi coolant on a new machine and was looking for some data...

...and the material being cut is usually ductile iron, around 250 BHN...

I think you will find tool life is exponential to coolant pressure (and volume) and not linear.

For example, for the first 25% increase in coolant pressure and volume, you might see an increase in tool life of 50%. For the second 25% increase in coolant pressure and volume you might see and additional increase in tool life of another 25% from base line. For the next 25% increase in coolant pressure and volume, you might only get an additional 10% increase in tool life. Then for the final 25% increase in coolant pressure and volume you might only gain another 10% on tool life.
