    Good or bad idea? Concreate!

    Hi guys.

Okay, so my router should be here soon!

The cnc 3040, i was wondering to give the whole base some weight and a little more rigidity, would it be a good idea to fill in all the hollow sections of the extrusion with concrete/cement?

I know there maybe an issue of it coming loose - My other thought was flexible grout (similar weight to concrete).

There maybe other hollowed out places on the router too i could infill.

I am hoping this should help reduce some noise and help keep things a little sturdier?

    Craig

This has been discussed a few times here on CNCzone over the past years and you might find something if you did a few searches.

The idea is valid. It does not affect the rigidity much but you can expect some improvement in terms of reduced vibration. You are correct about concrete shrinking as it cures but there are additives that can minimize this. Alternatively you may be able to find some expanding grout mix that would work. You don't want too much expansion though.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

Have you considered oil and sand to fill the tubes?

or a mixture uf epoxy and sand? Since epoxy resins do not shrink, an epoxy-granite filler is better. Check it on the Gpoxy Granite zone in the forum.

Concrete and Aluminum do not mix.

Do not put conventional concrete in aluminum extrusions. The two are not compatible.
