    WABECO F1200 MILLING MACHINE

    Hi,

I have plans to buy a wabeco F1200 milling machine. I read a lot of positive reviews of this machine. But when I was studying the drawings (and parts list) in the instruction manual I found that the bearings of the (head)spindle were BALL bearings and not TAPERED ROLLER bearings. I have always thought, that the right bearings for the spindle were tapered roller bearing, because of the radial and axial forces tot the spindle. Even cheaper Chinese mini mills (like optimum BF20) have tapered roller bearings. So I don't understand why such a good brand have chosen these (wrong?)ball bearings. Does anyone have some idea?? I think this is important to know before I will buy this machine!

Virtually all "real" milling machines use precision angular contact ball bearings in the spindle. Only cheap Chinese machines use tapered rollers, because they are much cheaper.

As ray has said, in the spindle ball bearings are superior to tapered roller bearings in almost every way.

Tapered roller bearing work great on my trailer. As stated, precision angular contact ball bearings are best for a spindle.

Commonly use in benchtop machines are also deep groove ball bearings. "Deep Groove Spindle Bearings - Deep groove ball bearings have full shoulders on both sides of the raceways of the inner and outer rings. They can accept radial loads, thrust loads in either direction, or a combination of loads.

The design of deep groove bearings make them suitable for the addition of closures which help exclude contaminants and retain lubrication." These are likely what they used.
