    Rack and pinion inaccuracy

Dear all, I built a cnc machine using rack and pinion mechanism for x and y motion.
I use mach3 as a controller softwre, and the same settings were given to x and y axis.
The y axis works great and precise.
The problem is in the gantry (x axis), it is powered by two motors.sometimes it works great and other times the traveled distance is less by 3mm.
Each side of the x gantry is driven by a motor, and the rack at each side is formed by two pieces : one of length 1 meter and the other is of length a half meter.
Are the motors weak and i need powerful motors or the two rack pieces are not well aligned?? Any suggestion is really
    appreciated.

There are several possibilities. Can you tell us a bit more about the setup:
    - motor rating
    - drivers
    - PS voltage
    - gear reduction
    - pinion size
    - rack pressure angle and pitch
    - is there good contact with the rack and pinion
    - speed you are trying to run at
    - acceleration settings
    - does it happen on slow speeds or just on fast

Sorry to ask the details, but it does help.
