USB Key - Installed Where I Won't Lose It

    Thought I'd share...

I just built a computer dedicated to CAD and CAM and while I was ordering parts I stumbled upon a USB header that provides a USB port inside the case. I got this $12.00 part (P/N 12-200-474) at NewEgg.com.

An alternative to this is a USB card (for a PCI slot or similar) that has an internal USB port.

That is also a nice way to keep somebody from touching it accidentally.

I like your idea! I have my programs on a laptop and I dont like the dongle sticking out the side of it as it could get broken off.

I mounted all my dongles in a plastic electronic project box and connect to the PC through 3 ft USB extension cables. Currently have 3 dongles in one box with an extension attached to each. The box is big enough not to walk away or get lost and I can easily move the keys to the many computers/machines sitting around the house. Now I don't have to worry about damaging the dongle and it's connector.

That is a great idea. Make sure you put a big sticker on the PC to remind yourself the dongle is in there. Things like this have a tendency to be forgotten till you see the compactor on the garbage truck coming down on your now replaced computer...
