    Hardinge Conquest 42 spindle question

We just took the leap and bought our first CNC lathe, 1990 Conquest 42 with live tooling, really low hours clean machine.
I have lots of books that came with it, but don't have access to the prior operator. It has parts catcher, tool setter, tail stock, 12' bar feed and live tools.

Reading what I can on the Internet, it looks like it must have an indexing spindle or a full C axis. Is there an easy way to determine which I have?
Does anyone know what the resolution is on the indexing?

Also, if it is an indexing spindle, is it possible to upgrade it to a full C axis? Would this just be a card in the controller?

    Thanks for any input,
    Robert Paisley

If it is equiped with a "C axis" there would be a C position register on the position screen. It is not possible to update.

If you have the indexing it has a 1 degree resolution and would be programed with a "B" command

    re: spindle

    Hi bclark,
    Thanks for the info!
It does not have a C axis readout, just x and z.
I will play with the indexer commands.

I know it's an old post but I'm new here so I'll give you what I know.
Resolution of indexing I believe is every 5 degrees.
Under the control panel, behind the front panel is the spindle and pulley assembly. You'll notice two pins with proxy sensors mounted to an aluminum block. Each one of these pins are good for 10 degrees and they are staggered by 5 degrees.
In order to go full C axis you would need to change the spindle motor, add a C axis drive board and the control. It would be easier to buy a machine with C axis controls and moderate support.

EDIT for some reason I didn't see the other posts here until I posted.
I haven't programmed degrees for a while so my memory may be off on the amount of degrees, I thought it was 5 degrees.
