Need advice with mounting encoder on servo

I am doing a Mach3 retro on a Hurco KMB mill. I am putting new encoders on the servos which are Electrocraft E703's. I have a couple questions regarding this:

    1. I was planning on removing the tach assembly since it is not needed anymore, but am having issues getting it all the way off. I attached a picture. I can't tell if that green collar is pressed on to the shaft or what. Any advice on this would be helpful.

    2. Second question is how to handle the shaft size on the servo. The shaft is 1/2" and the E5 encoders I am wanting to get only go up to 3/8". Two of the servos have a coupling adapter that the current encoders are on (see pic), but the Y axis is mounted off the pulley. So should I:

Try to machine down the shaft to 3/8"?

Remount the current shaft coupling after taking the tach off on the two servos and then try to find another one for the Y axis?

Look for encoders with a 1/2" bore?

    Thanks for the help!

Leave the tach, it is not hurting you and you may bugger the motor by trying. You can make an adapter to go from 1/2 female to 3/8 male, it is hard to tell because your pictures show nothing.

I have removed the armature in order to press the tach off.
One alternative mentioned involves removing the motor brushes, and chuck up the drive end of the shaft with the encoder end in a centre and turn down to 3/8".
Renco have 1/2 bore encoders but are a bit pricier.
Also look at Koyo, they make nice shaft type like the one in the picture, also through hole I believe.
No real need to press the tach off, just remove the brushes when in operation.

    opinion # 3:

    - leave tach, just remove brushes.
    - dont mess with motor shaft machining
    - just buy right 12" dia shaft encoder - PLENTY available out there; we sell EPC, Dynapar, both who have them.

Some encoder, I wouldn't mind seeing that!

    12" is child's play!

    Try 550mm (21.65")

    Optical angle encoders

I ended up going with the E6 encoders from US Digital. They actually go up to a 1 inch shaft size. Price wasn't too bad either, under $400 for 3 encoders with 10 foot cables and mounting plates.
