    od turning

can i use a g72 facing cycle for roughing a step block? Can a 80 degree od turn tool be used for this? what is the difference between roughing with g71 and g72? I'm trying to land a programming job that involves mills and lathes. Unfortunately in the past 25 years I have been with mills for 24 and lathes for only one. I need help.

G71 cuts along the Z axis and G72 cuts along the X axis. You could machine a step with either canned cycle but it is more conventional to do it using G71.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.
