    computer connection help

Hey guys I recently came to work at a new shop with some old machines. They all have rs232 ports and we transfer programs via an old laptop using an MS/DOS formatted program called Xtree. I want to upgrade the computer and don't know where to begin with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You either need a PC with multi system option at bootup DOS or Win, or go with a Win RS232 program such as DNC – wireless and wired, Free DNC for 1 machine
Many PC.s do not come with 9 pin serial now, There are some USB to RS232 convertors, but it is a not 100% they may work with your protocol.

Thanks Al. I would like to do away with the DOS system as it is not very efficient. From my reading, it seems a lot of guys are having trouble with usb to rs232 converters not transferring all the program data correctly. I would like to use a newer windows based DNC program with an ethernet to rs 232 converter. I'm just not sure what software will support this. I'm a little bit spoiled to running machines with usb ports and transferring files with a usb storage device.

This is the problem with older systems that there is not much choice to change the existing RS232 at the machine.
There is not a great deal of cost involved in trying a USB or ethernet convertor, the s/w you get with the convertor usually sets it up as a standard serial port so the software doesn't know the difference (hopefully)!.
The other alternative is to see what Cadem now has to offer in the way of other interfaces for DNC.
Your older machine also has to be DNC compatible though.
