I used a very low cost breakout board from China on my mill drill conversion with good results thus far. Let me say though that all I am using so far is the x,y, and z axis of this board. As I said though, no problems so far. Here is the one I bought.

I have a chinese board, exactly as above. It does seem to be quite good. Although that said, mine came with a faulty axis. But with 5 to play with, I just used one of the other "channels"

Have you tried changing the port cable , the cables that they sent with mine are garbage , i struggled briefly with the axis , then i changed the cable and the axis was fine .

i've got a few of these boards and they work ok

many of the guys preference the protected boards , and they are obviously going to be safer for the system , but unless a guy does some serious miss wiring then these boards are good enough and safe enough

I have a spare MicroProto Beakout box.

You would have to buy his steppers and cables though as they have encoders that talk back to the controller to provide for accuraccy.
Box is specific to MicroProto Steppers. Go to web site and email him for a price.
I have Manual and Licensed Mach 3 Software.
