    5056 drivers running extremely hot

I have 3 5056 drivers being powered by a 40v 10amp power supply. I am running 3 400oz in 4.09amp current setting. They are running with sw4 in the in "on" position and in 1/8th step micro stepping.

They were running great and my PC died that was running the machine. I set up a new PC and ran my first part with it and noticed a "hot electronics" smell. I opened the case they are in and the heat was coming from the drivers. They never ran hot like this before and the only difference is they are plugged into a new PC.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Interference, possibly sending false pulses to the drivers?

How different is this new pc? AMD vs Intel, intigrated parallel port or PCI card, etc..

Interference is a maybe, but I doubt it.

The Computer is very different, but has been used for over a year to power a different machine so I know it works well. Its a 1.8ghz P4 with 512 ram running linuxCNC2.5.1.

The one thing I was curious about is the driver timing settings used in LinuxCNC. They should be an observation ( telling LinuxCNC when the driver is looking for pulses) but Im not sure. I wouldn't think they would affect the drivers heat generation.

Any input on the stepper timing? I cant look at the previous settings because the hard drive died on the last computer so Im not sure what they were like last time.

12 amps in motors on a 10amp power supply, at a "low" voltage... Seems right there its not very optimal. Can you up your power supply to 47vdc?

I'd up the pulse per rev to 5 or so to see if that helps anything, probably not for this issue. You could even try sherline 1/2 mode just to help a bit more on signal.

I also noticed that just simply upping the voltage and adding a capacitor to the power supply that mine cooled down a bit.

40v on 50v max drivers is "low"? The power supply is a toroidal 40v power supply and never caused an issue before, but no I cant change the voltage. These are the step timings Im using currently:

    STEPLEN: 1200ns min
    STEPSPACE: 1200ns min
    DIRSETUP: 5000nS min
    DIRHOLD: 5000ns min

I found them in another thread here on cnc zone. I think they are what I was using before but I cant be sure. The system ran for almost a year before these issues came up.

I run my 5056Ds at 47.5 vdc, max is suposidly 47.

Higher voltage is better, less amps, more efficient.

I assume you've looked at the power coming out of your power supply on an oscilloscope so you know its good?

Nope, no access to an o-scope. But I've checked with a volt meter. So that's as good as I've got.

Ill play with a couple things and see if I can get some results.

i run my 425 oz steppers off 1 amp of power each. my drivers are rated for 56v and im giving them 36 and they never get hot. there cutting at 50 ipm using 8tpi acme screws. the max i can get them to go without stalling is around 75ipm.

Put your meter on AC, what do you get?
