    Big Drills ?

I have a few things coming up that require a 1" drill & 1.25" drill. I've been looking at insert drills, but just not sure the Tormach can handle something that big.

Has anyone here drilled anything that big on a Tormach ? If so can you please post what was used (link, picture).

Why not use a boring bar, or use progressively bigger drill bits. I've done it on a SX2 so I know its possible.

your going to need +5-7hp to push that large of an insert drill in steel with the feeds and speeds they recommend. if the material is soft like aluminum, then use stanard steel drills.

maybe you can interpolate the holes as an alternative? Depends on how deep they are.

These parts are going to made from 6061-T6. I like using drills to remove lots of material fast and have been using 1/2" & 3/4" drills already, just thought I might be able to shorten my machine time using a larger drill.

For aluminum I use parabolic and they work very well. Curious why you'd use steel twist drills for aluminum ?

    "interpolate the holes"

Yes, I normally use a 1/2" EM for most of my larger helix interpolation work and have a 3/4" TTS conversion going now. A drill is just faster.

I use an annular cutter for holes up to 2” deep (4” deep if I can turn the part around.) with my 1.5HP lathe. Here is a 1-15/16” diameter annular cutter with ¾” shaft held in a 5C bar on my lathe. BTW I finish the 2” diameter hole to size using an insert boring bar. However for making large holes with my Tormach I trepan using a 1/2" EM.
