    Connecting to CNC from PC

Alright guys...got a problem. I have an older PC (windows 95) that this shop is using for DNC. They want to move the control to a newer PC which is running XP 2002 SP3. I have tried several configuration of the wiring form the 9 pin to the 25 pin to no avail. I just cant get the PC to communicate with the cnc machine ( we are testing on a Mori SL253B ). All parameters are the same (4800 baud, even parity, 7 data bits, 1 stop bit) between the pc and the cnc.

For the wiring I am currently set with the 3 wire setting (9-pin/25-pin) as 3 to 2 ,2 to 3, 5 to 7, and on the cnc side 4 & 5 tied in and 6, 8 & 20 tied in.

I tried direct wiring also to no avail.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

If all of the settings are correct and the cable used to work with the old computer just fine, then I would suspect the serial port on the newer computer is not working.

This is where a RS232 breakout box is handy, it has status lights for all lines, including seeing whether data is actually being transmitted.

Try in the new computer bios to check the parallel port status, maybe it's disabled or set in a strange direction or who knows, it's a 2 minutes task!

But the OP indicates a Serial (RS232) port?
