Can You Adjust Y Axis Ballscrew Preload w/o Removing Splash Guards?

My Y axis backlash is now just over 2 thou. It used to be under a thou and I'd like to get it back there. I've ruled out both the X and Y axis gibs as the problem since a tight X and a very loose Y gets me to about 1.9 thou backlash on the Y. The next step I believe is to increase the preload on the Y axis ballscrew, however, getting behind my machine is a true pain in the axis. Can you even adjust the Y without removing all the splash guards? They look to be right in the way of the wrench travel if the nuts are positioned the same as the X axis.

I modified my splash guards by removing the section behind the column and attaching the ends to the column on the left and the electrical box on the right. This gives me access to the Y-Axis Stepper, Bearings and the ATC controls without removing the splash guards. I am in Texas now but with post photos this weekend.
