Question slaved motors aren't working in synch

I have a 3 axis router that uses 2 motors on the Y axis- basically 4 linear actuators bolted together. They are full step NEMA 23 Vexta motors, 5 wire , the drivers are potted (the motors and drivers came as a piece). I generate code in a CadLink application and use Dancad or Danplot as a controller. It's worked fine for years. Last week the left hand Y-axis motor started holding for 10 steps every time the direction changes fron CW to CCW. I've switched cabling, reloaded software, checked for mechanical interference- it still does it. Driver chips being solid-state, I can't imagine a failure being so consistent, though I'm no electronics wizard. It's not stalling so I don't think it's a power supply issue. Anyone have some thoughts on this? Thanks

    ah yes...

i have had this problem before, was due to 3 things either individual or in combination, first an exesive cutting load to the machine on one side this is obviously easy to spot. The second is as the motors get older the magnetism decays slightly, resulting in imbalance between them, this seems to cause a little resonance at slowst speeds, so the weaker one will faulter on steep accelerations, this is less evident with only one motor on axis. Thirdly also as electronic circuits and motors age, ie heat cool heat cool ceat cool etc. the sensitivity to control voltage may change slightly, this is more evident in analog electronics than digital but not impossible, and may result from power supply being very close to power needs (not enough headroom power), and particular repeatable situations is just enough to tip things over into error.
I would.. swap the leads from drivers to motors, if the problem is now the other side its your driver, if the problem stays that side its your motor or power supply. If all motors are fed from one power supply, try unplug the leeds to an unused axis(Z) driver that it using some ampres, and try, if now works better, the power sup may be a little small. I have come across more missing step problems manifest like these at ultra low speed with no load than when machines running hard.
    hope this helps

How good or bad does slaved steppers generally work? I can buy either a 20£ 185Ncm motor or a 10£ 125 Ncm motor, ie. the cheaper one is cheaper per Ncm!

Anyone using a setup where you have 2 motors for atleast X and Y?

I do realise theres a lot more work, mounting and cable-wise with using 2 motors, but are there any other obstacles Im not seeing yet? Can I use one controller for 2 motors without problem?
