question on kollmorgen servos and amplifiers

    Hello all.

I have been a machinist for a for over 20 yrs. I have decided to make my own cnc router. I got my hands on 2 kollmorgen servos but dont have the amplifiers do i have to buy kollmorgen amplifiers or can I use another brand that would be compatible.

I'm new to building cnc's but know enough that I would rather use servos than steppers

    thanks

Primarily depends on the feedback device. A quadrature encoder will work with most any brand of drive. If it a serial encoder or a resolver, your options will be more limited. Hard to say more without knowing what kind of motors they are.

You can download the selection guide here: http://www.kollmorgen.com/en-us/prod...n-us_reva.pdf/

We need to know the rest of the motor model number, specifically the part that describes the feedback device. Check out page 69-70.
    Something like AKM 31 E – E K C N C- 00

BAD NEWS. The last C in the model number means the motor has a "Smart Feedback Device (SFD)". In other words, proprietary. It is described a bit on page 59. Your options are to use a Kollmorgen drive or replace the encoder with a "standard" quadrature encoder.

    Thanks for the information.
Would you be able to point me in the right direction in finding a internet store that sells them?

On the other hand I can buy a Kollmorgen amplifier from the AKD model line and use it too. just don't know how much a bottom of the line one goes for.

I guess I have some decisions to make.

    how's the quality on kollmorgen.

    Thanks again

Mike Kilroy here on cnczone sells Kollmorgen. I've never used their stuff but they have a good reputation as far as I know. Kilroy was here

If replacing with encoders, being AC servo's, you would either need a drive that will use the encoder for commutation detection or a encoder with commutation tracks to turn them into BLDC mode.
I would think the expedient method would be to obtain Kollmorgen drives?
Also you need drives that take step/dir signal if going with the likes of Mach etc.

Keebler Matt, thank you, and all your comments are right on of course! SFD feedback is proprietary to Kollmorgen; it is lower cost than an encoder in our motors, but many many times better - like 3 bill counts per rev or so....

Mike, Kollmorgen has three drives that can use this feedback. The latest and probably best new price one is the AKD series. Also the S300 & S200 can accept that feedback, as well as the G&L Smart drive.

Feel free to email me and I will quote new, NOS, and refurbed models in case you do not want to change them out to simple encoders. That way you will at least have all price options covered....
